- Explaining vocabulary
- =====================
-
- Most of my hypertext systems (HyGlos, Hyplus, Hynet, HyperLAN)
- include a thesaurus/glossary system with the following capabilities:
-
- Highlight any word ..... system displays a definition
- Type in any word ....... system displays a definition
- Hyperjumps to glossary . system displays word definition
- Word definitions ....... each can contain secondary hyperlinks
-
- Using this capability, for example, a user could:
-
- 1. Type in the word ACC and system displays ACCELERATE
- 2. System lists phrases containing the word ACCELERATE
- 3. Upon selecting ACCELERATED DEPRECIATION system:
- a. Defines the term
- b. Shows preferred usage of the term
- c. Shows synonyms for the term
- d. Shows the broader and narrower terms
- e. Lists key hypertext jumps to the idea in text

- Explaining vocabulary -- page 2
- ===============================
-
- Typically, beginning users of a hypertext system use the arrow keys
- with the contained classification system to find desired material.
-
- However, if the hypertext system contains the above described
- thesaurus/glossary capabilities which provide a language map to
- all ideas, advanced users tend to type in the nearest word they know
- then follow the vocabulary scheme to the desired material.
-
- As an example, one of my commercial CD-ROM hypertext systems contains
- a 6,000 word glossary system (and 40,000 lines of supporting text).
-
- Unfortunately, the HyperBBS does not now contain a glossary system
- because its construction generally can only be done by the SYSOP.
-
- However, I hope to add glossary capabilities to HyperBBS using a
- routine that notes in a special file whenever a desired word in the
- glossary in NOT found. If the SYSOP is conscientious, eventually
- most of the desired words will be supported by a glossary system.
